RFU Update
Wearing of Gloves by Age Grade Players
Following a number of enquiries regarding age grade players wearing gloves, the RFU had previously communicated the position that gloves should not be currently be worn. However having reviewed this and to minimise the impact that this may have on playing numbers, especially as the cold weather draws in, we have updated the guidance.
One of the key strategies to reduce the risk of infection transmission during rugby activity is through regular (at least every 15 min) sanitising of hands during training sessions and matches. Players that wear gloves cannot effectively sanitise the surface of the gloves on a regular basis during training sessions and matches, limiting the effectiveness of this measure. Therefore, not wearing gloves is the most effective way to ensure that a players hands are regularly sanitised. However it is recognised that age grade players may wear gloves to keep they hands warm during colder weather. This is acceptable provided the gloves are changed for a different pair at least every 15 min (in line with regular hand sanitising measures). A clean and dry pair of gloves instead of the wet and cold ones will also help the players enjoy their rugby more too! Once removed, gloves should be washed thoroughly before any further use.
